Windows 10 Virtualization – Phil Meadows, Lead Partner Consultant

  • Configuration version
    • Hyper-V, both server and client have been at conf 5.0
    • UI has changed to display configuration version
  • Delayed Upgrade
    • After upgrade from older versions
      • v5.0 supported
      • Can travel back
    • Manual process to migration
    • Config 5.0 are fully supported on Win10
    • Config version is NOT the same as Gen1/Gen2 differences
  • New files
    • Originally Hyper-V used text-based XML, designed for only storing direct config data, intended to be small and rarely modified
    • Started to grow out of control, a lot of non-config info
    • 6.2 – New config file
      • .VMCX – baseline config of the VM
      • .VMRS – Runtime and saved state info
      • Can have a mix of 5.0 and 6.2 on Win 10 host
  • Integration Components
    • IC will no longer be updated using vmguest ISO
    • Updates to the IC will come from Windows Update
  • Production Checkpoints
    • Used to be called snapshots = app-consistent checkpoints
    • Were not designed for production use, open connections or in-flight data would be restored if checkpoint applied
    • Now supported and fully baked into UI and PS
      • Production
        • Seperate setting in UI, equivalent to backup technology
      • Non-Productiong
  • Connected Standby
    • Big issue on SP3
    • With Win10, has been extended into Hyper-V
    • Energy efficiency gains, about 5% degraded perf
  • Improvements
    • PS Updates
    • Memory resize/Demand
    • Hot add/remove NIC
      • Gen2 only
    • Shielded VM
      • New option adds vTPM to VM
      • Enables Bitlocker on boot volume
      • Configured using PS
      • Only available in Gen2
    • VM Grouping
      • Logical groupings of VMs to help make managment easier
      • 2 types
        • VM collections
        • Management collections
    • Can send VM name to Enter-PSSession
      • Can enter into a session with VM through VM creds
      • Will prompt for guest creds
      • Only in 6.2
